AROUND PINE ISLAND ART ASSOCIATION

Wanytta Hinsdale
1933-2008

A Tribute to Wanytta
by Phyllis Dowd

The Pine Island Art Association is a family of artists working and growing together. We gather to paint and in the process notice all the delightful qualities and talents that make us unique. We work on committees, help with the show and share potluck luncheons together and rarely take time to notice just how wonderful our little community of artists is. Today we must stop and remember a dear friend and member of the Pine Island Art Association.

One of our faithful members, Wanytta Hinsdale,  passed away this week of complications associated with cardiac surgery. She was a quiet lady, always organized and busy. She maintained our membership list and distributed membership cards. On Friday mornings she sat near the windows and painted, in the second seat to the right of the front door. She frequently brought corn pudding to share and usually assumed responsibility for the kitchen on potluck days -- always busy but never boastful about her responsibilities. You will probably remember Wanytta as the lady who called you during the show to ask you to bring a replacement for your painting that just sold. I think she loved that job because she got to deliver good news. It was her style to sprinkle happiness along her way.

She spent the summer in Pennsylvania with family and returned to Cape Coral early each Fall. Wanytta was a member of our Association for at least 15 years and our long time Delegate to the Art Council of Southwest Florida.. She loved to stand up at the February Council meeting and tell the group how many people attended our recent show and how many paintings were sold. It amazed me,  but she always managed to sneak that number in at least twice and always allowed time for everyone to gasp.

Sometimes on the long trips to Naples or Marco Island I would ask Wanytta little questions about her family or how she met her husband and dancing partner Bert. I would be given a glimpse into a life of kindness. She raised a family, ran a fabric business, helped her first husband run a fishing camp and cared for family members through illness. Nothing dimmed her joyful outlook. Nothing was too much. She did what needed doing and moved on to the next project. We are fortunate to have spent time with her.

FABRIC PAINTING WORKSHOP
DEC. 8, 2007

An enthusiastic group gathered on Saturday, Dec. 8, for a Fabric Painting Workshop
taught by Dianna Willman.  The members painted various scenes on our PIAA T-Shirts, and
you can see for yourself what our talented group of artists can do in just 3 hours!!  Some
of the photos represent a "work in progress" and others were ready to wear home!!

CULTURAL PARK THEATRE
PIAA  PORTRAIT SHOW
October 2007
Here are a few photos of  the paintings and the reception for the artists.  Cultural Park Theatre was very kind to allow us to have a portrait show and the idea was conceived as an added attraction for patrons of the production of Louise Wigglesworth's play, "Drawing the Human Form."  About 20 of our artists attended the play on Pine Island Night, and a great time was had by all!

Once again, PIAA can be proud of  our very talented member artists!   Thanks to all of you who participated, and special thanks to Uschi Lanier and Tony Fenner for gathering and hanging the paintings.

Alliance for the Arts Events

PIAA artists volunteer at the   Media Brunch and Walk Thru the Arts,  Oct. 18 and 20

PIAA was well represented at the Alliance for the Arts events on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and Saturday 20.   There were representatives from many local art and theatre companies,  weavers  and choral groups.  It provided a great venue for networking and we came away with contacts for upcoming events in which our PIAA artists may participate.    Information on opportunities for showing your work is available at the studio.
